UV varnish

Spot varnish leaves only one area glossy, usually the logo or a title, on a matt background. It is the finish people ask about most when they see a well made card.

How we make it

UV varnish is a liquid coating cured instantly under ultraviolet light, which means the piece can be handled straight away. It can be applied two very different ways. Across the whole sheet, where it works as a glossy protective coat, cheaper than lamination though not as protective. Or as spot UV, applied only over chosen areas of the design, usually a logo or a photograph. Spot UV is the one that gets noticed: the varnished area shines and can be felt against a matte background, and that contrast is what makes a card or a cover feel like a different class of product without changing paper. It needs a separate file marking where the varnish goes.

Frequently asked questions

How does it differ from lamination?
Lamination is a film and protects more. Varnish is a liquid coating, costs less, and allows the spot effect, which lamination cannot do.
What is spot UV?
Applying varnish only in selected areas, such as the logo. The contrast between the glossy area and the matte background creates the effect, and you can feel it.
Do I need to prepare anything in the artwork?
Yes, spot UV needs a separate black-and-white file marking exactly where the varnish goes and where it does not.
