How we make it

Spiral binding holds sheets with a metal or plastic coil running through a row of punched holes. It has one advantage no other binding matches: the document opens completely flat and pages turn all the way round, which in a working manual or a desk diary matters more than the finish. In exchange, there is no spine to print a title on, so it cannot be identified on a shelf. It is the fastest and cheapest binding, and it stands up well to daily use. Plastic is cheaper and comes in colours; metal lasts longer and does not deform if the document gets squashed.

Frequently asked questions

Plastic or metal coil?
Plastic is cheaper and comes in colours. Metal lasts longer and does not deform if the document is pressed in a shelf or a bag.
How many sheets will it take?
It depends on the coil diameter. Anything from a few sheets to fairly thick documents, by changing the gauge.
Can the title be printed on the spine?
No. Spiral binding has no spine. If the document goes on a shelf and needs identifying edge-on, perfect binding or hardback is the way.
