How we make it

A magazine is full colour throughout, which means four plates for each side of each sheet. That is why the price gap between two hundred and fifty and one thousand copies is much smaller than people expect: most of the cost sits in makeready, not paper. Interiors usually run on coated 90 to 115 gsm, light enough to keep postage down and sharp enough for photography. The cover uses heavier stock, 150 or 200 gsm, almost always laminated. Up to about sixty-four pages, saddle-stitching is standard; beyond that, perfect binding holds up better. Page counts must be multiples of four.

Frequently asked questions

Saddle-stitched or perfect bound?
Up to about sixty-four pages, saddle-stitching: it is cheaper and the magazine opens flat. Beyond that the stitching distorts the signature and perfect binding is better, and it also lets you print the title on the spine.
What interior weight should I use?
Coated 90 or 115 gsm covers almost every case. Going up to 150 gsm inside costs considerably more and only pays off for image-heavy magazines with few pages.
Does the page count have to be a specific number?
Yes, a multiple of four, because each folded sheet gives four pages. If the material runs to thirty-eight pages, you go up to forty or down to thirty-six.
