How we make it
A book is printed in sheets, not in single pages, and that is why the page count matters so much. Each sheet folds into signatures of sixteen or thirty-two pages, so a two-hundred-page book fits neatly while a two-hundred-and-five-page book drags along an almost empty signature. Adjusting the manuscript to multiples of sixteen saves real money. The interior of a reading book uses bond, and cream-tinted bond tires the eye less over long sessions. If the book carries photographs, the interior goes on coated stock. The cover is a separate job, full colour and laminated. Paperbacks are perfect-bound; hardbacks are built onto covered board.
